Lector Ministry
Lectors play a key role in the celebration of Mass. A lector is a Minister of the Word who proclaims God’s Word to the assembled faith community.  Liturgical proclamation of the Word is an awesome responsibility to which one is called and into which one is formed.

Being a lector is more than reading.  This ministry involves studying, preparing and gaining an understanding of God’s Word that can be transferred to the assembly in a clear and understandable manner.  The vital role of the lector is to communicate the depth and importance of the scriptures.

Training is provided along with a workbook that enables the lector to practice and prepare prior to Mass.  Schedules are distributed months in advance and on average lectors usually participate in the Mass once a month. If you are interested in becoming a lector or have questions regarding this ministry, please contact Maria Wilbert at 630-530-3498 or email to [email protected]

Dress Considerations when Participating as a Lector at Mass

All that we say and do when we serve in the Lector Ministry at Mass speaks about our reverence for the sacred word we are communicating to the congregation, which includes our demeanor and how we dress.  The focus during the Ministry of Lector should be on the word that is being read; anything that detracts or calls attention to oneself and away from that central point, including one’s dress, should be avoided.

General appearance, apparel, and accessories worn during the Liturgy of the Word liturgy should reflect the dignity of the role of one has been called upon to provide. Accordingly, Lector Ministers should dress nicely and modestly.  Business casual attire (dress pants, slacks, or skirts with dress shirts or tops, conservative dresses) is always preferred.  Dress shoes should be the footwear of choice.  Nothing a minister wears should distract from the community’s prayer.  Shorts, jeans, and similar casual attire are never appropriate.  Proper dress and appearance whenever one attends liturgy is an important commitment of a liturgical minister.
