Safe Environment
The Safe Environment lessons, adapted for the Diocese of Joliet, is a way for your child to learn to recognize and respond appropriately and assertively to situations that might lead to improper (sexual) touch. The instruction is gentle and will help your child learn about these unpleasant realities in a positive way. Your child will not be exposed to specific sexual language or depictions of graphic situations or to anatomically correct language regarding private body parts. Children will be instructed as follows.
  • Kindergarten will read and discuss the storybook Sam’s Story.
  • Grades 1-3 will be instructed using Talking About Touching photo cards.
  • Grades 4 and 5 will be instructed using Yes You Can Say No and review Internet Safety
  • Grades 6 -8 will be instructed using a DVD called A Time to Tell (Boy Scouts of America).
The opportunity for parents to view the Safe Environment instruction materials is by appointment with one of the RE Co-Directors.
Dates for the children’s instruction will be on Sunday, November 4 and Wednesday, November 14th. It would not be necessary to keep your child home if you choose to opt out of the Safe Environment lessons. Those lessons only take up a small portion of the class time.

If you do not wish for your child to participate, please print out and sign the release form below  and return it to the RE Office before the date of your child’s instruction. Other options will be provided for your child during the session.
